For Researchers

The Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Research Network (ECHORN) welcomes proposals from external investigators that seek to enhance the understanding of non-communicable chronic diseases in the Eastern Caribbean region. ECHORN facilitates the development of a population based cohort in Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its main aim is to estimate the prevalence of both known and potential risk factors associated with the development of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

ECHORN includes information on the following group of individuals selected from each island in our study:

  • 40 years of age or over
  • English or Spanish speaking
  • Island resident for at least 10 years
  • Able to provide informed consent
  • Non-institutionalized at time of data collection
  • Stable contact/residential information
  • No plans to relocate from island within next 5 years

External investigators are invited to become involved by

  • Proposing an ancillary study
  • Proposing a paper in collaboration with an ECHORN Investigator
  • Proposing a presentation in collaboration with an ECHORN investigator
