For Participants

Things You Should Know

How do I participate?

Participants in the ECHORN study are randomly selected from communities in the four sites. If you are contacted by an ECHORN research team member, we hope you will agree to participate in the study.

What is involved in participating?

If you agree to participate in this study, you will complete a health questionnaire and receive a free physical exam. A nurse will also take a blood and urine sample from you. If you agree to participate in the study, you may also be asked to provide an additional blood sample or a saliva sample for biobanking.

What is biobanking?

Biobanking is the storage of samples for future testing. The samples collected are used in research that tries to identify genetic markers of disease.

Will I get the results from my tests?

Yes. We will provide the results from your blood and urine tests to you and/or your doctor. However, you will not receive results from the samples that you biobank for future testing.

What if I decide I don’t want to be part of the study?

After reviewing the details of the study and asking any questions that you have, you can decide whether or not you want to participate. You can still be a part of the study (survey and physical exam) without biobanking a sample. Even if you decide to participate, you can choose to leave the study at any time.

Is this a one-time thing?

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to return to the assessment center for follow-up visits

How much time will it take?

The visit to the center should take between two to three hours. This includes intake, completing the questionnaire, completing the physical exam and providing a blood and urine sample.

Will my information be kept private?

Yes. We will assign an ID number to you that will allow us to store your information without using your name. Your name will not be included on the survey, the samples given for biobanking or any of the test results from the study.
